Jonathan Peter Taffer, often shortened to Jon Traffer, is an entrepreneur and TV personality best known for hosting Bar Rescue. He is a respected figure in the bar culture of the US. Jon is often referred to as the Gordon Ramsay of bars because of the similar breakdowns, rants, and antics. Bar Rescue itself is a show similar to Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares. Taffer is seen judging and helping various bar owners with their failing businesses on the show. He is also known for being the mind behind the NFL Sunday Ticket package that was launched in 1994.

Taffer was born to a Russian-Jewish couple on 7 November 1954 in Great Neck, New York. he grew up in a family of entrepreneurs as his grandfather used to own a printing press of his own. His father passed away when he was just 2 years old. Taffer grew up in a well-to-do household in Great Neck where he completed his schooling as well. After school, Taffer attended the University of Denver to study political science with a cultural anthropology minor. He ended up dropping out of college soon and moving to Los Angeles.

After dropping out, the first job Taffer ever picked up was of a bartender in Barney’s Beanery in 1973. His first prominent job in a bar was his stint as a bar manager at a nightclub called The Troubadour in 1978. In 1981, Taffer was handed over the control of the bar as a whole. Taffer didn’t own a bar of his own before 1989. His first-ever business venture was a failure that saw him lose $600K. Taffer blames his business partner for ripping him off but has kept the details of the business and the culprit a secret.

In the 1990s, Taffer was contacted by ComSat, who wanted him to develop a campaign that would get them access to the market of bars. What Taffer came up with is known as the NFL Sunday Ticket today.

In 2010, Questex Media Group appointed Taffer as the president of their division ‘Nightclub and Bar Media Group. Soon, Taffer was inducted into the Nightclub Hall of Fame alongside 5 others.

Spike TV launched Bar Rescue in 2011 and called Taffer on board. The show was about Taffer studying and revving failing nightclubs and bars across various states. He became popular for his ruthless attitude on the show and helped a lot of owners rejuvenate their projects. Bar Rescue is still aired on Paramount Network, which Spike TV was renamed in 2018. The ninth season of Bar Rescue is underway with 213 episodes already aired.

In 2013, Taffer wrote a book of his own called ‘Raise the Bar: An Action-Based Method for Maximum Customer Reactions’, which was published by New Harvest and turned out to be a best-seller. Taffer has an app of his own called BarHQ and also hosts a podcast called No Excuses. The podcast airs every Tuesday on PodcastOne.

Taffer hasn’t shied away from making his political views public and has shown his support for Donald Trump’s economic policy. Taffer is also known for being against the concept of minimum wage and believes it would result in automation-induced mass unemployment.
