Barry Adrian Reese is a rapper better known by his professional stage name Cassidy. He rose to fame in the 90s through battle raps and freestyles before being discovered by Swizz Beats, who signed him to his label Full Surface Records. Cassidy has been actively making music since 1999. His most recent studio album titled Da Wiseman came out in February of 2021.
Cassidy was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 7 July 1982. His mother is from East Africa and of Ethiopian descent. He grew up around Philadelphia and by the late 90s had started freestyling and battle rapping as a teenager. His efforts showed results soon when he was noticed by professional rap hip-hop producer Swizz Beatz. Beatz signed him to his imprint Full Surface in 2002, which was under J Records and Ruff Ryders Entertainment.
Cassidy got his debut in November of 2003 when he released his first single called Hotel. The song featured singer R. Kelly and turned out to be a hit, charting within the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the US. Following the release of another single, Cassidy came out with his debut studio album in 2004. The album was titled Split Personality and proved to be a big success in his early career, earning a gold certification from RIAA. In 2005, he released a couple of singles before the release of his second studio album titled I’m a Hustla. It matched the success of its predecessor, debuting at the top of the Billboard 200 chart and selling more than 93k copies within a week.
The same year, Cassidy was arrested for an assault on three men in West Oak Lane, alongside his two accomplices. The assault involved the use of an AK-47 and resulted in the death of a man named Desmond Hawkins. An arrest warrant was issued against Cassidy and the rapper surrendered himself to the Philadelphia police later. Cassidy was put on a trial and was facing third-degree murder charges. However, the final verdict deemed Cassidy to be charged for first-degre murder minus a possibility of parole. In the end, he was sentenced to 11-23 months in prison and was released after serving 8 months.
Cassidy’s return to music was once again put on hold post-release when his SUV was crashed into by a commercial truck. The crash left him with broken bones, a fractured skull, and even temporary brain damage.
After recovering from the accident, Cassidy started working on his 3rd studio album. The album titled “B.A.R.S. The Barry Adrian Reese Story” came out in 2007 and debuted at number 10 while selling 63k copies within a week of the release. Cassidy released his next album “C.A.S.H. (Cass a Straight Hustla)” under a new label Kross Over Entertainment in 2010. The album failed to match the success of his previous work.
He didn’t release an album for nearly 10 years before 2020’s Da Science and Da Formula. His latest release came about in 2021 and was titled, Da Wiseman. None of the albums could replicate his earlier success.
