Luis Miguel Gallego Basteri, often shortened to just Luis Miguel, is a Mexican singer who is regarded as one of the legends of Latin music. Luis first burst into the scene during the early 1980s and stayed active until 2017-18. Other than being an exceptional singer, Luis is also applauded for staying true to his roots. He was the only Latin singer to not jump ship onto the English music scene in the 1990s when it was a kind of a trend. He is referred to as El Sol de México which basically translates to The Sun of Mexico.
Luis was born on 19 April 1970 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He descends from both a Spanish and Italian lineage. His father Luis Gallego Sánchez was a professional guitarist and used to be popularly known as “Luisito Rey”. He played an important part in Miguel’s career and was his first-ever manager as well. His mother Marcela Basteri used to be an Italian actress. She mysteriously disappeared in 1986, never to be found again. His father too tragically passed away in 1992 after falling into depression because of estrangement between the father and son.
Luis’ music career began when he was just 11 years old with a full album release. The album was called ‘Un Sol’ and won him a gold disc. At the age of 13, Luis was already touring across Latin American countries like Argentina, Chile, and Columbia. He released at least one album every year until 1985 before taking a hiatus and falling out with his father. In 1987, Luis hired a new manager and released a new album called ‘Soy Como Quiero ser’. By 1990, Luis had grown up into a showman and was already selling out concerts and topping Latin-American charts.
Luis started getting international recognition by his 1991 album ‘Romance’ was released. The album is still held in high regard because of its reintroduction of ‘boleros’ to the modern generations. It ended up being his most successful album with more than 7 million sales worldwide. His next album ‘Aries’ led to Luis winning a Grammy for the Best Latino Pop Album. In 1996, Luis Miguel received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and became the first ever Latin artist to have done it.
In 2008, Miguel released his 10th album called ‘’Complices’ which debuted at number 10 on the Top 200 Billboard. The album set a record for the highest position a Latin artist’s Spanish album had achieved. It also topped the Top Latin Albums chart, making Miguel the artist with the most albums in the top position.
Luis Miguel is the highest-selling artist of all time in Chile as well as the highest-selling foreign artist in Spain. His world tour between 1999-2000 was the highest-grossing tour by any Latin artist ever with 1.4 million fan attendance.
His last album release was 2017’s ‘¡México Por Siempre!’ which won two Latin Grammy Awards for the best album and the best regional Mexican album.
