$uicideboy$ or Suiceideboys is a hip-hop duo made of two cousins Scrim and Ruby da Cherry. The duo began creating music in 2014 on SoundCloud and has earned a cult following in hip-hop because of their unique music and style. $uicideboy$ is known for experimenting with various subgenres of hip-hop and rapping about serious issues like depression and suicide. Scrim, often stylized as $crim, is the stage name of Scott Anthony Arceneaux Jr. Scott was born on 11 April 1989 in Louisiana. Growing up, Scott had an immense interest in DJing and used to be a big fan of T-Pain and Kanye West. To produce music as a DJ, Scott decided to buy a laptop and had to sell drugs to arrange the required money. Once he managed to do so, Scott started working as a DJ at parties at the age of 19. After joining the Delgado Community College, he got more recognition and started getting a lot of DJ gigs. To earn extra money, Scott started working in a furniture shop as a salesman. He worked there for 3 years but got fired because of his tattoos.
Ruba da Cherry’s real name is Aristos Norman Petrou. Petrou was born on 22 April 1990 to a Greek Cypriot father and an American mother. Petrou developed an interest in music at the early age of seven when he started learning violin and drums. By middle school. Petrou had already joined and left multiple punk rock bands. The final band he joined was called Vepo-rats where he played rums. Petrou left the band as the members were not serious about the band or their future in music. He also used to work as a waiter at his family restaurant.
Both Petrou and Scott were close since they were kids and shared a common interest in making a career out of music. This was when they decided to form $uicideboy$. The duo also made a suicide pact which meant the two would commit suicide if their career didn’t work out by they were 30.
The duo began their career on SoundCloud and Bandcamp by releasing an EP in 2014 named Kill Yourself Part I: The $uicide $aga. It featured 3 songs and an appearance from a popular underground rapper Bones. Their underground rap scene collaborations continued and they finally became a part of it in 2015 with the release of $outh $ide $uicide. The EP featured an already-established rapper Pouya from South Florida.
In 2016, $uicideboy$ made their first appearance on the Billboard Rap Charts with their EP Radical $uicide that peaked at number 17. In 2017, the duo started working on their first studio album. The album titled ‘I Want to Die in New Orleans; was released in 2018 and was based on the duo’s real-life events and struggles.
In 2019, the duo collaborated with Blink-182’s Travis Barker and Korn’s James Shaffer on their new EP ‘Live Fast, Die Whenever’. $uicideboy$’ latest release was their second studio album ‘Long Term Effects of Suffering’ that came out in 2021.
The duo has been surrounded by various controversies that include allegations of devil worship and plagiarism. Deadmau5 accused them of copyright infringement in 2016 for sampling his arts on their song Antarctica. The song was taken down before being made available in 2021 again.
