Vincent Lamont Baker is a former basketball player who currently serves as the assistant coach of 2021 NBA champions Milwaukee Bucks. Baker never won an NBA ring during his playing career but appeared in the All-Star Games from 1995 to 1998, four times in a row. He was also the assistant coach of the Milwaukee Bucks when they won the 2021 NBA Finals. Baker is often considered to be one of the most controversial players during his prime because of his alcohol and gambling addictions.
Baker was born on 23 November 1971 in Connecticut’s Old Saybrook where he also started off his career as a basketball player. He studied at Old Saybrook High School and played basketball there during his junior years. His college career began with Hartford university in 1989, which signed him on a scholarship to their basketball team Hartford Hawks.
During his debut season with Hartford, Baker put on impressive performances and averaged 4.7 points per game. He received a place on the North Atlantic Conference (now known as America East Conference) All-Rookie Team because of his statistics and performance. By his sophomore year, Baker has become a regular starter and averaged 19.7 points per game. During his last season, Sports Illustrated called Baker the “America’s Best-Kept Secret”. Baker still holds a record with a staggering 28.3 points averaged per game in the NAC/AEC. By the end, Baker had a total of 2,238 points which still stands as a record.
His success with Hartford was noticed by the Milwaukee Bucks who selected him in their 8th pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. He played for the Buck for four seasons until 1997 and three of his All-Star game appearances came with them. The Bucks failed to make it to the postseason during his tenure with them but Baker was recognized as their leading star.
After the 1996-97 season, Baker went on to join the Seattle SuperSonics as a part of a three-way trade between the Bucks, SuperSonics, and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Baker played for SuperSonics for four years and appeared once on the All-Star team.
In 2002, Baker was a part of another trade that saw him join the Boston Celtics. His career and his game faced a steep downfall during his time with the Celtics. Baker had already started gaining weight prior to joining them. He managed to bring it under control but fell into a spiral of alcohol addiction. He even turned up for practice once while smelling of alcohol. Baker was suspended and eventually released by the Celtics in 2004.
After his release, Baker had short-lived and unsuccessful stints with the New York Knicks, Houston Rockets, L.A. Clippers, and Minnesota Timberwolves until 2006. By the 2005-06 season with the Clippers, Baker was already reduced to a reserve role and his tenure with the Timberwolves turned out to be his final as a player.
In 2007, he was arrested for driving under influence in Norwich, Connecticut. His struggles with alcohol kept getting worse and his house ended up getting auctioned in 2008. Baker had a loss of more than $100 million within a short period of time. Baker went to rehab and started to overcome his addiction by 2011. In 2015, he started managing a local Starbucks in his hometown of Old Saybrook. Since 2018, Baker has been the assistant coach of the Milwaukee Bucks where he began his playing career. He is currently living a sober life with his wife and four children.
