Born on 26 November 1955 in Los Angeles, Catherine was the eldest child in her household. Her parents immigrated from Ireland where his father used to serve in the Irish Army. After moving to the US, he also served in the US Air Force as a system engineer. Both Catherine and her parents have been devoted Christians their whole lives. Wood completed her schooling in 1974 in Los Angeles from a girls’ Catholic school Notre Dame Academy. She joined the University of Southern California to study economics and finances. She graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science degree. In college, she came in contact with Arthur Laffer, who was her professor.
Laffer served as a mentor throughout her career and helped her get her first job too. During her college, Laffer got her a job at Capital Group as an assistant economist. Wood worked at Capital Group for three years until 1980. Wood shifted to New York City for better career opportunities and landed herself a job at an investment management company Jennison Associates. She held the position of chief economist, managing director, analyst, and portfolio manager during her tenure there. Wood worked with Jennison Associates for 18 years and kept working on multiple different projects on the side.
After parting ways with Jennison Associates, she co-founded a hedge fund called ‘Tupelo Capital Management’ in 1998. Her next job was that of a chief investment officer in AllianceBernstein Holding. She joined the firm in 2001 and worked there for over 12 years. She decided to leave the company when the two parties couldn’t come to an agreement over her idea of exchange-traded funds.
This pushed Wood towards creating something of her own and that’s how Ark Invest came into existence in 2014. According to Wood herself, the name is inspired by the Ark of the Covenant, and reading Bible gave her the idea to name the company after it. Ark Invest manages exchange-traded funds, which Wood wanted to do originally at AllianceBernstein. Ark has been active for 8 years and has a market value of $23 billion today. The company is currently based in St. Petersburg, Florida, and employs 38 people.
In 2014, Matthew A. Winkler, editor-in-chief of Bloomberg News, named Wood as 2020’s best stock picker. In 2021, Wood was featured in Forbes’ “50 Over 50” list that showcased the most powerful figures aged over 50 from all over the world.
Wood is a single mother, living with her three kids in Wikton, Connecticut. She was married to Robert Wood before her divorce and Robert’s untimely death in 2018.
